Are you starving yourself fat?
Did you know that under-eating (consuming less that the calories required to sustain your body based on age, weight, and activity level) can actually make you fat?
It’s true! And so many women my age are struggling with it. As we get older, we think that a slow metabolism just comes with the territory. Not so! Our metabolism slows down because we lose muscle tissue; the master of metabolism and fountain of youth.
We need to focus less on losing fat and more on building muscle. Cardio is great for burning calories, but it doesn’t build muscle. Muscle is what revs our metabolism. It gives us strength, balance, and shape.
When we don’t eat enough calories, our body figures it out and sloooooows the metabolism down in order to protect our precious internal organs. This is when many of us think, “Oh no! I should do more cardio and eat even LESS!” But when we do that, we only lose muscle mass. It’s a vicious cycle of losing muscle and water, while maintaining the fat, and feeling crappy and tired.
Think of it this way: If you are a “pear” shape and you under-eat and run on the treadmill every day, you will lose weight, but you won’t build muscle. You will only become a smaller “pear.”
If you want to reshape your body, you must build strength. Ladies, you are not going to turn into Arnold Schwarzenegger by lifting 10. 20, 30 or more lbs 3-4 times a week for 30 minutes. What you WILL see, is strength, balance, and muscle definition, along will a revved metabolism.
If you want to lose weight, you need to:
1. Know your calorie bracket
2. Eat a balanced diet of protein, veggies, fruit, healthy fats and carbs (which may mean eating a lot MORE)
3. Build muscle
Stop dieting! Build muscle. Make sense?
