How Leadership Ability Determine’s a Person’s Level of Effectiveness
It’s hard, if not impossible, to achieve success without a tribe to support you. We all need people who will inspire us with fresh perspectives, speak truth, and under-gird our strengths and weaknesses. In John C.Maxwell’s book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, the Law of the Lid holds particular significance.
The lower an individual’s ability to lead, the lower the lid on his potential. Conversely, the higher an individual’s ability to lead, the higher the lid on his potential.
What is leadership?
Simply stated, leadership is the ability to influence others. If you are just starting out in business, you may not see yourself as a leader yet. But I assure you, we are all leaders in some way. We all have a circle of influence-no matter what size. Your personal success relies on your ability to influence others and lead your team.
You can’t successfully run a business if you are only in it for your own success. When you invest in your team, they will feel valued and supported and as a result, the entire organization will prosper. It’s all about thinking outside yourself and being intentional to empower and equip others. Wouldn’t YOU worker harder for someone who was invested in your best interest? Hmm… I see a direct correlation to parenting here!
How can I increase my leadership ability?
The best way to improve your leadership ability is to first, accurately assess where you are now. Ask those in your sphere of influence for feedback. Are you able to make decisions easily? Are you clear and concise in your communication? Do those you collaborate with feel valued and “safe” to make mistakes? Are you a good listener? Are you fair? Would YOU want to follow you? Take personal inventory of any leadership experiences you have had.
Next, list out the goals for your business. Be realistic -how many of those goals require a skill set that you don’t have? This is where you start building a team and delegating. Find people who are strong where you are weak… and then empower and equip them well. What are their needs? What fulfills them?
When you genuinely care and nurture your team well, everyone rises to the highest level of success.
